Steven Gerrard's decision to keep young forward Cameron Archer in his Aston Villa squad could pave the way for Keinan Davis' return to Nottingham Forest.
Davis enjoyed a successful stint at Forest during the second-half of last season, playing a part in the Reds' promotion to the Premier League. In his 14 starts for Steve Cooper, Davis recorded five goals and two assists.
He rejoined his parent club for pre-season in Australia this summer but did not take part in any friendlies due to a hamstring injury. Forest have signed striker Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record fee of £17.5million, but it is believed the club are keen to add another man to their attack.

The Telegraph reports that owner Evangelos Marinakis is keen to invest in another striker, with Davis and Burnley's Maxwel Cornet emerging as possible options. Given Archer's impressive pre-season for Villa, Gerrard revealed the youngster will stay at the club for the upcoming season, which raises further doubts about Davis' future.
During his loan stint with Forest, Gerrard previously said: "Steve [Cooper] is brilliant at updating you with progress and the type of work that he is obviously continuing with Keinan. Steve has given him the opportunity to play regular games which is what he needed.
"Keinan is at an age where he hasn’t really posted consecutive numbers in terms of appearances or goals throughout his career yet. He’s obviously a big talent but it would have been probably the wrong decision to hold him back and keep him here to compete with Ollie [Watkins] and Danny [Ings] in the nine position as there’s no guarantee he would have got the game time that he needs at this stage in his career.
"We’re hoping he can stay healthy, he can continue knocking the appearances out and keep adding goals and really help contribute at Forest, like Cam [Archer], he will come away with us on pre-season, we will give him opportunities, we will see where he’s at and we’ll make a decision from there. But listen, we won’t stand in anyone’s way in terms of people we feel need football and a different challenge at that time but they are very much Aston Villa players that are representing our club and we wish them all well."
The 24-year-old is under contract at Villa Park until 2024, and is believed to be worth in the region of £15m.
