Steven Fletcher has admitted he came closest to joining Celtic back in 2020 before joining Stoke City as he opened up on his transfer links with the club over the years.
The Scotland international is back north of the border after penning a two-year deal at Dundee United with Jack Ross. The Tannadice boss admitted he had a 'nibble' at bringing the 35-year-old to Easter Road 12 months ago while in charge at the capital club but things could have worked out differently again after his latest Hoops revelation.
The hitman started his career at the Hibees before turning out for the likes of Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City before his Tangerines switch. Celtic have always been a name that has never gone away when it comes to Fletcher and he admits after lots of links over the years, the fans will be sick of hearing his name.

He said: “Earlier on in my career when I was linked with Celtic I didn’t have much to do with it. At that age you just leave it to agents and all that, only finding things out when they’re pretty much done.
“So I don’t know how close it came back in the early days, but before I signed for Stoke that was the closest a move to Celtic came.
“It didn’t happen in the end and I’ll tell that story one day!
“But I was linked with Celtic a lot over the years.
“So much so I think their fans were sick of hearing about it!”
Dundee United are set for a European adventure as they bid to reach the Europa Conference League group stages. They enter the third qualifying round and have brought in Fletcher, Dylan Levitt and Craig Sibbald so far this summer.
They kick off their Premiership campaign at the end of the month at Rugby Park against newly promoted Kilmarnock.
