Steven Davis hints at extended Rangers stay as he outlines targets for next season

Steven Davis has hinted that he could be about to sign a permanent deal at Rangers when his Southampton contract ends.

The Northern Ireland captain has hit form in recent weeks after struggling during the start of his loan spell from Southampton.

Davis barely played for his parent club this season and looked ring rusty as he got to grips with the intensity of the Scottish Premiership again.

But he has suggested that he could be sticking around for next season as he spoke ahead Saturday's trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts.

Davis is likely to continue in the starting lineup and his recent form has convinced fans that he can still play a part.

He said: "I had to take a step back due to the lack of games. It has been great to be involved again and get the intensity back. I've enjoyed being in the games the last few weeks in that role.

"I feel like I have a big part to play and can be a part of this team moving forward. We need to try and take it to another level next season."

Rangers have been linked with a number of players ahead of the summer window but Steven Gerrard insists that is taking a backseat for now while they focus on finishing as high up the league as possible.

His side are currently eight points clear of Kilmarnock but are 11 behind league leaders Celtic.

Gerrard said: "We want to try and take maximum points tomorrow and then we will look forward to the next game. We don't have to look at the focus and targets for next season now. Things will happen behind the scenes in terms of targets, pre-season and transfers.

"Steven (Davis) was always going to take a bit of time because of his lack of game time, it was about all of us needing to be a bit patient and now we have him at a level where he is confident and influencing games."
