Steven Davis backs Barry Ferguson to 'embrace the challenge' as Rangers boss

Steven Davis has backed Barry Ferguson to 'embrace the challenge' after getting his Rangers tenure off to a perfect start against Kilmarnock last night.

After going 2-0 down early doors, the Ibrox club rallied, and thanks to goals from Vaclav Cerny, Cyriel Dessers and Nedim Bajrami, they came away 4-2 winners.

It was a terrific start to life in the Rangers dugout for Ferguson, who was only appointed as interim head coach on Monday following Philippe Clement's dismissal.

Speaking live on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening, club legend Davis backed his old teammate to succeed in his new role.

The Northern Irishman previously took charge of Rangers on a temporary basis back in 2023, spearheading a 2-1 loss to Aris Limassol and a 3-0 win over St Mirren: "There are a lot of similarities with the situation with Barry coming in - it's out of the blue for him, and it was the same for myself when Michael Beale lost his job at that time," said Davis.

"As Barry spoke about, it's a whirlwind those first 24/48 hours and he didn't have a lot of time to prepare for his first game, but it's a fantastic opportunity and he's going to embrace the challenge."

It didn't look likely after a tumultuous opening 15 minutes, but Rangers eventually came away from Rugby Park with a much-needed victory last night.

Davis hailed his old team's triumph: "It was an absolutely brilliant comeback," he said.

"The first half-hour I think he will be disappointed with but certainly after that there was a great reaction from the team and he will be delighted to win.

"It's no easy feat coming from two goals behind at Kilmarnock so he will be a happy man."
