Steven Bergwijn explains what Antonio Conte said to him before heroic end to Tottenham win

Steven Bergwijn has explained what Antonio Conte said to him before his dramatic double against Leicester.

Conte confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Arsenal game that Bergwijn was available again after injury and would be named on the bench rather than starting.

The postponement gave the Dutchman a few more days to build up his fitness after a recent calf injury. There was no start for him at the King Power Stadium, but he certainly made the most of his substitute appearance.

After coming on 11 minutes before injury time, Bergwijn received a yellow card in the 94th minute after a small scuffle with Foxes centre-half Caglar Soyuncu.

Leicester looked set for three points with the clock at 95 minutes at 2-1 up but two goals in 80 seconds from the substitute turned the game completely around and left the Leicester players in complete shock.

An equaliser in the 95th minute and a winner in the 96th secured a vital three points in the top four race as Spurs moved one point behind West Ham with three games in hand.

Speaking after the game, Bergwijn explained how he was feeling and what Conte said to him before going on to make the difference.

"It's fantastic, it's fantastic (laughs). The fans here and also I scored two goals so I am happy," he said after the game, via the BBC.

But what did the manager say to Bergwijn before sending him on?

"Umm.. score goals! Create some difficulties there for the defenders and stay close to Harry [Kane]. I was so happy, I jumped in the crowd there was so much emotion."

Understandably, his manager was extremely pleased about the victory too.

Conte told BBC Match of the Day: "I think we showed today that we don't want to give up. Never.

"The players know very well what our philosophy must be. We must fight to the end and try to also get a result.

"Today to lose this game was not right. We created many, many chances. We were unlucky when we conceded. At the end, we were very good and we believed to the end. We wanted three points and we deserved them."
