Steve Morison reveals more Cardiff City contracts are 'in the pipeline' as he warns summer recruits

Steve Morison has revealed there are more contract talks "in the pipeline" after the club announced the extension of Isaak Davies' contract.

Wales youth international Davies penned a new deal up until 2025, with the club holding an option to extend for a further year, just days after Morison himself signed on for next year.

Things are beginning to look positive on that front and Morison confirmed negotiations are under way behind the scenes to get more players signed up in the near future.

"Ultimately, we've still got to win games of football, no one wants to lose no matter where you are," he said ahead of the Bluebirds' trip to QPR on Saturday.

"That’s going to be our main focus. Let’s just carry on what we’re doing, because we are doing a really good job and we enjoy winning games of football.

"Outside of that, we are planning on the future, hence Isaak Davies’ contract, other ones are in the pipeline.

"Then we start putting down and nailing down other areas of recruitment. It's exciting times and it's something we need to get right."

Morison cited the financial constraints around the club, and indeed the majority of the teams in the football league at the minute, and admits that some decisions around contract talks might be taken out of his hands.

The club are currently fighting lawsuits on three fronts, the fallout of which could total more than £40m if Cardiff were found against. You can read more about that here.

So while he admitted he would like to keep some of the 10 senior players currently heading out of contract in the summer, he knows the discussions are not straightforward.

"Yeah, of course," he said when asked if there are players he wanted to keep. "There are discussions to be had. Things might be taken out of our hands.

"They are all senior players who can all walk [away], regardless of what we offer. So, there are going to be some difficult and honest conversations.

"It’s never a nice thing when you are coming to the end of your contract and there is uncertainty.

"With everything the way it’s going, then there has to be a sense of self-awareness of where the club is now.

"That’s where the conversations might be easier as well, because some players might say ‘I can’t stay for that so I need to leave’ and then you go, 'OK, that's fine'.

"But we’ll cross those bridges when we need to. Let's get ourselves completely safe and see where we are then."

Morison reiterated the club's aim to become more sustainable and is excited by the challenge that lies ahead in the coming months.

Navigating this summer's transfer window will arguably be the biggest challenge he has faced so far and one he insists "we must get right".

Morison warned that if players are coming to simply make a quick buck, then they will not be wanted at Cardiff City Stadium. While funds may be tight, he hopes the vision of the club acts as the biggest lure to summer transfer targets.

"Vision is going to be the biggest one. What they are coming into," Morison said of what the club's most attractive selling point will be in the summer.

"The structure, the setup, the opportunities. Being a part of something new and exciting, we just need to make sure we sell that and make sure we get the right people.

"I’ll say it now, because I will say it to them, If someone is coming here because they just want money, that’s not someone we want in the building.

"That’ll be the change and the way we will be trying to work it."
