Steve Morison backs ex-Rangers defender Jack Simpson to be an ‘excellent addition’ at Cardiff

STEVE MORISON has backed ‘fantastic’ defender Jack Simpson to be an ‘excellent addition’ to his Cardiff City ranks this season.

Simpson brought an end to his Rangers career on Tuesday evening as he put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with the Championship outfit.

The Englishman moved to Ibrox from Bournemouth during Steven Gerrard’s tenure but struggled to make an impact and quickly fell down the pecking order after failing to impress.

The arrival of John Souttar and Ben Davies this summer further limited his chances under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and he has now moved to Wales for an undisclosed fee.

Simpson arrives at the Cardiff City Stadium with a point to prove and boss Morison is confident the stopper will rise to the challenge in the coming months.

Morison said: "Jack's going to bring balance for us in defence.

"He is a fantastic player, with a beautiful left foot. He is someone who wanted to come and be part of it.

“Jack's here with a smile on his face, and ready to get to work. He's an excellent addition to the group."

Simpson made just 14 appearances for Rangers but was part of the squad that clinched a historic 55th league flag just months after he arrived at Ibrox.

Now the 25-year-old is determined to kick-start his career as he makes a fresh start in the Championship this term.

Simpson said: "I'm very excited to join the Club. I spoke to the manager about what he's trying to do here.

"I'm a ball playing centre half, and hopefully that'll suit the way the team are playing now.

"I'm excited to be here. I want to help the team and play in as many games as possible."
