Steve Madden's iconic noughties sandals are back

As the fashion set continues to mine the nineties and early noughties for style inspiration, yet another throwback product is having its day in the sun (again).

With their stretchy lycra strap and chunky flatform soles, many will recognise the iconic Slinky Sandals by Steve Madden.

The platforms were worn on-stage by the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, became the on-screen uniform of Lizzie McGuire, Sabrina The Teenage Witch and several Mary-Kate and Ashley films and graced the red carpet on the feet of Gwen Stefani, Halle Berry and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

In 2017, Madden quietly re-released the ultimate millennial shoe on its website, but it's only recently that the normcore footwear has made a full return.

The classic black flatforms, which now retail for £65, are available from several British retailers, including ASOS and Dune and Selfridges.

High street stores, like Topshop, have put their own spin on the throwback silhouette, with the brand creating an animal print version of the chunky slides.

Earlier this month US Urban Outfitters created an exclusive collaboration with Madden, showcasing a 2019 twist on the peep toe platforms with lime green and neon pink designs, the majority of which have now sold out.

"Relive the glory days of the ‘90s with this throwback slide sandal from Steve Madden," reads the Urban Outfitters website. And, indeed, that's exactly what Gen Z is doing.
