Steve Kerr reveals why Jonathan Kuminga fell out of Warriors rotation

Steve Kerr‘s team selection for the Golden State Warriors comeback win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday (Dec. 6.) Kerr had opted to bench Jonathan Kuminga heading into the game, removing him from the rotation. However, as the Warriors searched for a win, it ultimately ended up being Kuminga who provided the spark to turn the game around.

Kerr discussed his decision to sit Kuminga when addressing the media during his post-game press conference. The veteran head coach noted that he has a deep roster and often has to make tough decisions regarding who gets minutes in certain games.

“He was great, he was key to the game,” Kerr said. “He stayed ready. He was out of the rotation because it’s hard to play 10 guys. Brandin and Moses have earned the minutes they’re getting, and we obviously needed him. The game called for JK with Portland’s youth and athleticism…I was so happy for JK that he stayed ready and produced the way he did…I think every night is going to be different with this team, that’s what I’m finding out.”

Kuminga ended the game against Portland with 13 points, 2 steals, 1 rebound, and 1 assist in 16 minutes of playing time. He shot 100% from the field, converting all six of his attempts.

Steve Kerr has a tough job ahead of him. It’s clear the younger talents on the roster are all ready to produce at a high level and are deserving of additional playing time. Finding ways to incorporate the younger players while also keeping the veterans happy is going to be a difficult balancing act.
