Steve Cooper sets out clear stance amid off-field changes at Nottingham Forest

Head coach Steve Cooper says his focus remains on trying to pick up results amid off-field changes at Nottingham Forest.

Following a tough start to the season on their return to the Premier League, the Reds have undertaken a reshuffle behind the scenes. Last week, Filippo Giraldi was brought in as sporting director, with a view to auditing the existing infrastructure at the club. The departure of recruitment duo George Syrianos and Andy Scott followed, as Forest’s summer transfer business came under scrutiny.

Cooper insists matters off the pitch are not a distraction, however. And the Welshman says his priority is to try to get his team climbing up the Premier League table, having moved off the foot of the standings with Monday night’s 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa.

“There has been some changes. I can’t really go into the ‘why’, because it’s a club decision and they’ve decided to do that,” Cooper said, ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“Of course there’s good communication with myself and around the club, in terms of where the ownership, the chief executive and the sporting director want to take things. That’s what they do, they make decisions to try to progress the club.

“It can always cause a little bit of a talking point and upheaval when a club make changes. But my focus has got to be on my job, which is coaching the team, preparing the team and managing the training ground to try to make each day a good one, so we can keep improving.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to pick up our results. So that is really where my focus is.”

Asked if the changes pointed to a different recruitment strategy at the club, he added: “That’s something the people above me will make decisions on, in terms of where they see that. My role is the head coach; coaching the team.

“There has been good communication amongst all levels of the club. I’m fully aware of exactly what they’re thinking of doing, and I have no problem with that. I’m in control of today’s training, meetings, players and trying to get ready for the next game.”
