Nottingham Forest legend tells Steve Cooper who must be the 'first name' on his team sheet
Nottingham Forest legend Garry Birtles says Taiwo Awoniyi should be the first name on Steve Cooper's teamsheet until the World Cup.
Awoniyi got the only goal in Saturday's surprise win against Liverpool, his third of the season since a then-club record summer move from Union Berlin.
The former Liverpool striker has struggled to cement a regular starting place at Forest with Cooper trying to prove a front three without a focal point can work. European Cup winner Birtles says Awoniyi needs to start all three games before the break for the World Cup though after scoring on the rebound when his initial effort from Steve Cook's cross came back off the post.
Harry Redknapp raves about two Nottingham Forest players after Liverpool win
Harry Redknapp has named Nottingham Forest duo Dean Henderson and Ryan Yates in his team of the week after victory over Liverpool.
The former Tottenham and Portsmouth boss picked Henderson out as his star man for his performance, hinting at a possible World Cup call being on the horizon. He pointed to Henderson's saves being vital as Forest kept a clean sheet at the City Ground.
“To keep a clean sheet is one thing, but to do and get the three points against Liverpool is some achievement," Redknapp told BetVictor. "Forest had luck on their side, but this man made some crucial stops, including one world-class save at the end to deny the Reds. He’s in excellent form ahead of the World Cup and his display on Saturday makes him this week’s star man.”
