Steve Cooper makes 'catching up' admission as Nottingham Forest gain ground on Championship play-offs

Rise and shine, it's the morning after the day before and things are looking positive at Nottingham Forest after an important win over Bristol City.

The Reds gained some crucial ground over Championship rivals and are now within touching distance of the play-offs ahead of a busy week.

Here are the latest Nottingham Forest headlines brought to you by NottinghamshireLive on Sunday, February 27.

Steve Cooper gives verdict on Nottingham Forest's win over Bristol City

Head coach Steve Cooper was delighted with the manner in which Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways at the City Ground.

After a flat display at Preston North End in midweek, the Reds responded in style with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Bristol City.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and James Garner clinched the three points, and the hosts could have scored more had Robins goalkeeper Daniel Bentley not made some terrific saves.

It was a result which keeps Cooper’s side within touching distance of the play-off places, sitting three points behind sixth-placed Luton Town ahead of Friday night’s clash at Sheffield United.

“We’re still catching up. All we’ve got to do is look after our own house, and that’s by doing what we did today - attacking games, playing well and getting our own points on the board,” said the Forest boss."

Manchester United sent message as James Garner stars in victory

Nottingham Forest fans are in a positive mood after Steve Cooper's side gained ground on the Championship play-off spots with a 2-0 win over Bristol City.

James Garner doubled the home side's lead five minutes to capitalise on the Reds' one-way traffic after Brennan Johnson had opened the scoring.

Garner's rammed finish after good build-up play from Max Lowe and Scott McKenna meant Forest cruised towards three points and the victory.

And it was the on-loan United star's brilliant performance in midfield that was the main talking point for Forest fans at full-time.

One supporter said "James Garner has got a very big future! Class again today!" and another added that Forest needed to "sign Garner on a permanent NOW!!"

A third fan said: "Wonder if we can convince Jimmy this is his new home now? I'm sure Man Utd won't mind...."

Forest fans praise Matty Cash as Polish national team takes stand against Russia

Former Nottingham Forest man Matty Cash has come out in support of Ukraine as Russia's invasion of the country continues.

Cash, now with Aston Villa, plays for the Poland national team - who are due to play Russia in a World Cup play-off game next month ahead of the tournament in Qater later this year.

Cash became a Polish citizen last year having qualified through his mother's side and made his debut for Czesław Michniewicz's side in November.

He showed his support for Ukraine by sharing a statement that has been released by Polish players in conjunction with the Polish Football Association.

In it the players and their FA make clear their feelings on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that started on Thursday, and outline their wish not to play the play-off against Russia.

Ukraine borders Poland to the country's east and has started taking in refugees.

"We, the players of the Polish national team, together with the Polish Football Association, decided that as a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, we do not intend to play in the play-off match against Russia," a statement tweeted by Cash, along with the flags of Poland and Ukraine and a handshake emoji, read.
