Steve Cooper makes admission on Nottingham Forest contract situation

Head coach Steve Cooper says he isn’t thinking about his own contract situation, with his full focus on preparing for Nottingham Forest’s Premier League return.

The Welshman has a year left to run on the deal he signed when he took charge at the City Ground last September. Owner Evangelos Marinakis spoke about getting Cooper tied down to a new one after promotion was secured, and an agreement is believed to be close, with talks having taken place in the off-season.

Reds star Brennan Johnson’s contract was also due to expire in 2023, but he has put pen to paper on fresh terms. And that left many fans hoping the manager would be next.

Asked if there was any update on his situation, Cooper told NottinghamshireLive: “I don’t know. It’s not something I think about too much, if I’m being honest.

“I think about the team, I think about the staff and just being the best club we can be on a day to day. My real focus is on new players coming in and building on from where we left off at Wembley.”

Marinakis has backed Cooper in the transfer market so far this summer, sanctioning a significant recruitment drive. Six new signings have been made so far, with Neco Williams becoming the latest arrival in a £17million move.

After the club’s 23-year exile from the top-flight was ended at Wembley, Marinakis pledged to fully support the man who had masterminded that success. Asked if Cooper’s deal would be extended, the Greek businessman said at the time: “Yes, Steve will be with us. He has another year left on his contract but I want him to be happy.

“I want to give him the players that make him even happier to achieve big results and to make all these fantastic fans happy.”
