Steve Cooper explains why £17m Neco Williams was key Nottingham Forest transfer target

Neco Williams’ “incredibly high” potential was a key factor in Nottingham Forest’s pursuit of the Liverpool defender.

The Reds have made the 21-year-old their sixth signing of a busy summer window. A fee in the region of £17m has been splashed out to secure his services, with a four-year deal being penned.

Forest head coach Steve Cooper has been monitoring Williams for some time. And the Wales international was one of the club’s main targets to replace Djed Spence at right wing-back, after the Middlesbrough loanee’s outstanding form last season.

“Despite being only 21, Neco has established himself in the Wales starting XI,” Cooper told the club’s official website, as the move was confirmed. “He’s played in the Premier League, the Champions League and in World Cup qualifiers in the last 12 months and he is a very talented right-back.

“We believe that he’s got an incredibly high ceiling and that he can play a huge role for us at Nottingham Forest in our return to the Premier League. We’re delighted to have him on board.”

Williams spent 15 years at Anfield, coming up through the ranks at the academy. He made his debut in 2019 and went on to feature 33 times in total, including in the Champions League.

He was at Fulham for the second half of last term, playing a part in their Championship title-winning success. And the Cottagers, as well as Southampton, were credited with an interest in signing him this summer.

He follows Taiwo Awoniyi, Dean Henderson, Giulian Biancone, Moussa Niakhate and Omar Richards in linking up with Cooper’s men. A debut for the newest arrival could come against Burton Albion on Tuesday night, when the Reds play their second pre-season friendly.
