Steve Cooper answers question on Nottingham Forest future as pressure increases after Leeds loss

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper insists he is not thinking about his future amid his position coming under increasing scrutiny after defeat to Leeds United.

The Reds have now gone eight games without a win and sit outside of the bottom three on goal difference alone. Losing at Elland Road continued their torrid form on the road this season, with just one win registered on their travels in the league.

Orel Mangala gave them the lead in a crucial clash with their relegation rivals, but the advantage lasted just eight minutes. Jack Harrison and Luis Sinisterra went on to clinch the points for the hosts.

Cooper remains confident he is the right man to improve Forest’s fortunes and said he had not heard from the club’s hierarchy immediately after the game. But he is under severe pressure as the Reds bid to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

“I respect the question, and I understand it 100 percent, but I’m just not that guy that thinks like that,” the Welshman said, when asked about his position. “I always think of the greater good of the club.

“Any sort of worry, disappointment, frustration I’m feeling right now is the fact that Forest have lost a game we could have done so much better in. That’s just the way I’m wired.

“Rightly or wrongly, I’ve trained myself to focus on the stuff I’m in control of - that is to work as hard as I can every single day, believe in my work and stay true to it. That’s just where I’m at.

“I’ve been answering questions about myself for a little while now. Before the international break they were different types of questions. I’m just not that person that thinks about it. All the joy of winning and disappointment of losing is just about what’s right for the football club, not for myself.

“I really believe in myself and believe in my work. I believe in the level I can work at.

“I have trained myself just to focus on giving my best every day, believing in my work and staying true to it. I don’t think around that (his future), because if I start thinking around that I won’t be doing the things I said I believe in doing. I’ll stay true to that.”
