Steve Barclay has been appointed as the new Health Secretary after the resignation of Sajid Javid.

Mr Barclay, previously the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and chief of staff for Downing Street, will take over the role, while Nadhim Zahawi was promoted to be the new Chancellor.

In announcing his resignation on Tuesday, Sajid Javid said the British people “expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor “acting in the national interest".

He said: “I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership - and you have therefore lost my confidence too.”

Responding to Mr Javid’s resignation, the Prime Minister said: “You have held significant positions in Government for the past decade, and have served myself and former Prime Ministers admirably.

“You have used your personal experience to bring about change in government, from fixing the injustices of Windrush to setting out recently a plan to address suicide.”

In announcing his resignation, the former Chancellor Rishi Sunak wrote in a letter “the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding: “I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

The two shock Cabinet resignations came after Mr Johnson apologised for his handling of the Chris Pincher row.

Mr Johnson told reporters earlier Tuesday he should have sacked Mr Pincher when he was told about an sexual misconduct investigation against him when he was a Foreign Office minister in 2019.

While Mr Johnson has been left clinging to office by the resignations of some of his closest colleagues, other Cabinet ministers including Dominic Raab, Liz Truss, and Michael Gove have all indicated they would be staying in Government.

It is the latest blow to hit the Prime Minister’s authority after the loss of by-elections in Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield in June.

This came just weeks after 41 per cent of his own MPs voted to remove him as leader in a no confidence vote, which Mr Johnson survived, with many critics citing anger over Partygate.
