With both of the Diaz brothers looking to get back in the cage this year, Stephen Thompson is raising his hand as a willing foe.
Thompson (16-6-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC), a former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, took to social media Monday and said he would like to mix it up in the octagon with either Nick Diaz or Nate Diaz.
“Wonderboy” doesn’t seem particularly picky about which member of the family he would take on, because he thinks both would be compelling matchups for fans to watch.
“I’m down to fight (Nick Diaz) or (Nate Diaz)!” Thompson tweeted. “I have nothing but respect for both of those guys and I’m ready to go. Who wouldn’t love good striking battle?!”

Thompson, No. 9 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings, is coming off back-to-back losses against Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns. The 39-year-old was out-grappled in both those matchups and is clearly seeking a fight against an opponent who would allow him to work his patented kickboxing game.
Nick Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) hasn’t fought since September, when he suffered a TKO loss to Robbie Lawler in his comeback fight after more than six years away from active competition. His longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, recently stated a return to action is on tap for some point his year.
Nate, the younger of the Diaz brothers, is champing at the bit to step in the cage as he looks to fight out the final bout on his current UFC contract. His frustration around the inability to sign the fight has been evident on social media, with Diaz lashing out for the promotion “slow rolling” him and even asking for a release.
