Stephen Robinson says St Mirren shouldn't have been surprised by Motherwell's quick start

Stephen Robinson insists his Buddies shouldn’t have been caught napping by Motherwell’s rapid start at Fir Park.

After sacking boss Steven Hammell, the Steelmen were rejuvenated in the first half last night under interim boss Stuart Kettlewell and quickly fired themselves into a two-goal lead.

While Ryan Strain did pull one back to give St Mirren hope of a comeback, the Paisley side couldn’t find a leveller in a disappointing second half, with Robinson admitting his team didn’t deserve even a point from their trip to North Lanarkshire.

Robinson told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “I’m obviously disappointed, disappointed with the first 20-minute performance. They did to us what we usually do to other teams. They landed on more second balls and put balls into good areas.

“We gave ourselves a lifeline with the goal, but ultimately I don’t think we deserved anything from the game. Sometimes you get nights like that.

“Motherwell’s start didn’t surprise me. They’re a team fighting for their lives so it shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“We didn’t cope with it in the first 20 minutes. We played in front of them way too much. As a collective we know it wasn’t up to our usual standard.”

The Buddies missed the chance to jump up to fourth in the Premiership table, currently still sitting sixth ahead of struggling Ross County’s visit to the SMiSA Stadium this weekend.

St Mirren will be hoping their strong home form continues, having won just twice on the road so far this season.

Robinson said: “We’d sort of put that [the away record] to bed, because we beat Aberdeen away and had two great results against Livingston and Kilmarnock on the plastic pitches.

“So it’s a setback, that’s all it is. It’s three points we wanted but remember, it’s only three points, so we can’t get too carried away.”
