Stephen Robinson says St Mirren's positive reaction against Hibs gives him 'hope' of claiming European spot

Stephen Robinson revealed St Mirren’s second-half response gives him hope they still have a shot at claiming a European spot.

The Buddies were off the pace in a costly opening half hour at Easter Road on Saturday, with Hibs coasting into a 2-0 lead after two defensive errors from the visitors.

The Paisley club did recover in the second half, pushing their Edinburgh rivals for a European place close thanks to Alex Greive’s reply.

And Robinson feels that recovery shows the Saints are still up for the fight, with the club sitting just three points behind the Leith club with four games still remaining.

Robinson told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “Hibs didn’t have to work very hard for their opening goal and then they scored from a set play. I don’t think it was a surprise, people make mistakes and sometimes you get punished for them and we did.

“After 30 minutes, we called the players over and spoke about where we were trying to engage them, which we set out to do all along and maybe the mindset was to be solid and we take that as not being as aggressive in the press.

“We changed that and got the response we wanted. I don’t think there are many teams who come to Easter Road and pin them in as much as we did.

“We’ve got very few options on the bench to change it in attacking areas. As a manager, it is difficult to ask for any more in that second half and the response I got gives us hope that we still have a chance for Europe.”
