Stephen Robinson questions Celtic VAR penalty call as 'clear and obvious' but admits he needs second look

Stephen Robinson believes his side deserved more than the result suggested in a 5-1 defeat to Celtic.

But the Buddies boss - despite branding his side excellent - feels there was some contention over a penalty awarded to the Hoops after Liel Abada's smashed effort struck the arm of defender Richard Taylor. Celtic were comfortable at 1-0 but saw the penalty converted by Reo Hatate spark four late goals to progress to the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

Referee Steven McLean consulted VAR over the decision and awarded the spot-kick adding to Robinson's woes with the sending off of the centre-half as the Paisley outfit capitulated. Hyeon-gyu Oh's first goal was part of a late flurry from the Hoops despite the away side scoring their own penalty through Mark O'Hara.

He told Viaplay Sports: "[The result] doesn't reflect the level of performance. At 75 minutes I thought there was nothing between the two teams. The three Celtic subs score four goals, it shows the level you're playing against.

"I thought the boys were excellent. We created chances and half chances and had a right go at them. The penalty changes the game completely It's hard enough to play them with 11 men but when we went down to ten we got massively punished which you expect."

On the penalty decision and red card, Robinson added: "I haven't seen it back we don't have an analyst on the bench like they do so we will see it on Monday morning but if it takes that long to decide, is it clear and obvious?

"I haven't seen it back so you might tell me different. It's tough to take when you're that in the game but ultimately they were unbelievable and easy winners in the last fifteen and twenty minutes as their quality shone through.

"I can't say anything negative about our players, put on a super performance. We didn't sit and wait to be beat. The penalty changes the game rightly or wrongly. You can guide me on that."
