Saints boss Stephen Robinson is adamant his side deserved at least a point from their trip to Tannadice.
And he paid tribute to Mark O’Hara for capping off a fine week off the field with the perfect penalty on it.
The Buddies recovered well from their early setback and could have sealed all three points through Alex Greive’s late stoppage time chance.
Dundee United also missed a couple of gilt-edged opportunities in the dying moments, with Robinson pleased his side held on to a draw that keeps them right in the mix for a top-six finish.
Robinson said: “Our reaction after we went 1-0 down, I thought we had numerous chances which we didn’t take.
“We were brave and kept pressing high up the pitch. We got our rewards with the penalty but had another goal disallowed which was disappointing. I know it was very tight when the lines were drawn.
“We had numerous chances to go and win the game so the reaction was fantastic.
“You always worry after he [O’Hara] just signed a new contract. It’s been a great week and is something going to go wrong?
“But he is a cool, collected boy and he was very good again today.
“We just didn’t start for 20 minutes and that cost us two points.”
Jim Goodwin meanwhile believes Dundee United had two points “snatched away” from them in Saturday’s thrilling reunion with his old club.
While the visitors were celebrating after Curtis Main won his side a penalty, former Saints boss Goodwin was less than pleased with the decision that led to Mark O’Hara’s vital equaliser.
The ex-St Mirren skipper and boss felt Main went down too easily, with VAR taking a long time to eventually ratify referee Craig Napier’s initial decision.
Gutted Goodwin said: “The longer the VAR check goes on, the more you think they won’t give it.
“Clearly there isn’t enough contact there to make it obvious. I have seen two angles and I am struggling to see anything. It’s not a penalty.
“If we are giving penalties for that minimal, if any, contact there will be three or four a game.
“The St Mirren striker nips in front of my player and it looks like he throws himself to the ground.
“People will say it’s clever, but with VAR we shouldn’t be getting those wrong.
“It has really cost us. I feel two points have been snatched away from us.”
