Stephen Robinson laughs off St Mirren Real Madrid comparison and insists 'brave' players deserve all the credit for Celtic win

Stephen Robinson believes his Buddies have a long way to go before they can reach Real Madrid levels.

But that didn't stop him enjoying himself as St Mirren became just the second team to beat Ange Postecoglou's side this season along with the Spanish giants.

The Saints ran out deserved winners at the SMISA Stadium on Sunday afternoon after inflicting the Hoops' first league defeat in almost a full year.

Mark O'Hara and Jonah Ayunga did the damage in the impressive 2-0 victory, with the three points temporarily moving his side up to third in the Premiership table ahead of Motherwell's clash with Hearts later in the afternoon.

Robinson believes his side did everything right against Ange Postecoglou's much-fancied Celtic side and fully merited their win against the Hoops.

But when asked whether the result means the Saints are up there now with Real Madrid, laughing Robinson replied: “We’re NOT, trust me, we’re not!

“In terms of where we are as a football club, we’re really not.

“Listen, we won’t get too carried away. We’ve won a game of football and we've been very hard to break down this season.

"I'm not too bothered about getting the credit to be honest. I know how good a performance it was and in that dressing room there's been a lot of credit given to the players.

"But it's one performance and one result. When you start thinking you're a good team, that's when football has a way of giving you your comeuppance.

"We've beaten a lot of teams and it's been 'Hibs weren't very good on the day', 'Dundee United weren't very good on the day', Ross County etcetera.

"We're just quietly going under the radar and we're happy with that.

"Look, whatever they do they’re a top side, they’ve got a fantastic manager in Ange and they’re incessant, they’re non stop. And I think we weathered that, we were very prepared for it.

“It doesn’t really differ too much from our game plan. It’s not as if we ripped up the script just to play Celtic.

“We stuck to what we did. We knew we wouldn’t have loads of the ball but when we did we had to be brave."

While St Mirren can't compete with the likes of Celtic and Rangers financially, Robinson feels his club proved that hard work ethic and drive can see them match the Glasgow giants on their day.

He also pointed to the fact the Paisley side stuck to their guns and didn't deviate from their usual game plan was vital in coming out on top against the Hoops.

Robinson said: "There's no egos at the club and none in the dressing room.

"It wasn't too different to how we play in general, just maybe a bit deeper than usual because of the quality and possession Celtic have.

"The players deserve all the credit. You can do plenty of things in training but they have to be the ones to implement that and they did it for 96 minutes with the intensity and concentration they put in.

"In a moment or a split second Celtic can change the game. We never gave them an opportunity. We didn't give their creative players any room to play and I thought we were fantastic on the break.

"Potentially it could have even been more."
