Stephen Robinson insists St Mirren must stop gifting penalties to fix away form slump

Stephen Robinson insists St Mirren simply have to stop coughing up penalties if they’re to turn around their disappointing form on the road.

The Buddies suffered their fourth away defeat of the season in Leith, with Hibs crucially taking a lead into the break after Martin Boyle netted from the spot.

Defeats at Pittodrie and Ibrox earlier in the campaign were also compounded by defensive errors which led to penalties that helped the hosts coast to victory.

With another away trip looming against Ross County, Robinson believes his side have to stop giving their opponents an easy shot to race into the lead on their home turf.

He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “We seem to give a penalty away in every away game.

“Ultimately Hibs deserved to win, but we are much better than what we showed and I am confident of that. We will look at that, we won’t just brush it under the carpet.

“There are things we will show them so we get back to doing what we do well and pick ourselves up and get ready to go again.

“Three out of the five away games we have given a penalty away and it is a battle from there.

“Our decision making wasn’t as good as it had been. There is no real difference, outwith the top two, from the teams in this league and we have to make sure we reset now and go and do what we know we are good at.

“One result does not make us a poor team and one win doesn’t make us a great team. We have to stay grounded and come back from it.”

Having previously been happy with performances away from home despite suffering defeats outside Paisley, Robinson admits Saturday’s 3-0 thumping at Easter Road saw his Buddies fall well short of the mark they’ve hit up to this point of the campaign.

The Saints manager feels his side were unsure how best to approach their attacking capital opponents, an issue he takes full responsibility for.

Robinson said: “We created two great chances and their goalkeeper had made two terrific saves, which is credit to him. But I thought we started poorly. then started to get a few balls into the box and create a few chances.

“The goal before half-time was a big setback, but it was a penalty from what I saw back given the modern rules. It kills us a little bit.

“We can’t control the decisions, but we have to look at ourselves and say ‘we are better than that’ and we are. I take responsibility for that.

“We didn’t play like ourselves and we deserved nothing out of the game. We have to hold our hands up.

“Hibs did not have to work too hard for it. We have spoken about it collectively. We were caught in two minds about whether to play short at the back or pass it into our strikers and I think we have to remember what we are good at.

“I didn’t think we did the simple things well enough and we got punished for that.”
