Back in December, the actor announced the death of his late mum with a touching tribute. It read: "This incredible, inspirational, woman & the purest heart my mum passed away. Her words as a child “no one is above you and no one is below you all are equal“ have remained with me throughout my life. I feel so honoured and proud to share this with her An OBE for both of us mum."

Stephen's acting career spans over three decades that has seen him win multiple awards. Most recently he starred as Matilda's father in the musical film adaptation of the hit Roald Dahl novel.

Last year he was nominated for three BAFTAs for performances in Time, Boiling Point and Help - a Channel 4 drama set in a Liverpool care home during the pandemic.

He has also featured in a number of popular projects such as Snatch, Line of Duty, Gangs of New York and Peaky Blinders.
