Stephen Gallacher secures best European Tour finish for nearly two years at Open de Espana

Stephen Gallacher recorded his best European Tour result for almost two years as he finished 18th at the Open de Espana in Madrid last week.

The 47-year-old has struggled for form over the past couple of years but carded two scores of 65 to lead heading into the weekend.

A third round 70 had him well in contention for the final day, too, as he was sitting in third place but a disappointing final round 73 saw him slip down the leaderboard and ultimately finish on 11-under and 14 shots behind winner Jon Rahm.

Despite fading away on the final day, Gallacher secured a first top-20 finish on the European Tour since claiming 16th place in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January 2021.

Gallacher, who won the Ryder Cup in 2014, will be hoping to take confidence from that performance as the European Tour continues in Spain.

The Linlithgow ace is part of the field for the Andalucia Masters which gets underway on Thursday and the Mallorca Open next week as he looks to end a challenging year in style.
