Stephen Fry says 'life changed forever' after decoding symbol on car dashboard

Stephen Fry has shared a eureka moment with regard to one often ignored little symbol on a car dashboard.

You may have refilled your car a thousand times, but then turned into a petrol station forecourt only to suddenly forget what side the petrol cap is on.

It turns out the arrow on the petrol gauge symbol is purposefully placed on the side your petrol cap is located - a helpful hint when your mind suddenly draws a blank.

It led to the comedian breathlessly tweeting about the realisation in a way only Stephen Fry can.

"Well, simmer me in prune juice and call me Daisy," he began.

"I never knew till now that you can tell which side of a car the filler cap is on by a little arrow next to the petrol pump icon. 64 years on the planet shrouded in ignorance. My life is changed forever."

He included a picture of his dashboard to show off the 'hidden feature' to his huge audience of 12.4million followers.

The viral tweet, which was posted on Thursday, has attracted 952 retweets and over 29,300 likes so far.

His legion of followers joined in to give their two cents.

One wrote: "I only learnt that in last few years too. Although, I still get confused - does the arrow mean your car needs to be to the left of the pump, or that your filler cap is on the left - as I am pulling into the petrol station I forget and panic!"

"Runs to check car...." another reported.

"In some cars it is the side of the car that has the hose on the pump image," one Twitter user noted.

A third tweeted, adding 'thinking' and laughing emojis: "Haha I also found this out a few months ago at the age of 47 but I feel much ore at ease with this now with the information Mr Fry who I think is fantastic on many levels also didn't know…wonder if there is anything I do know that he doesn't…hmmm… I'm guessing not much"
