Stephen Corrigan: Frantic search underway to find family of missing Dublin patient whose bones were found in Rathmines

A frantic search is underway to find family or loved ones of Stephen Corrigan after it was confirmed that remains of a body found in Rathmines in April were that of the man who has been missing for nearly a decade.

The skeletal remains were identified as those of the The Weir Home patient on Cork Street who had been missing since 2011 and would have turned 57 this year.

Sadly Stephen's mother and his only other known blood relative have died since he went missing on November 22 of that year.

His skeletal remains were found on the common ground in south Dublin in April as operational works were being carried out in the area.

The grim discovery was made at Lissenfield near Lower Rathmines Road on April 9.

Following the find, the Garda Technical Bureau and a forensic anthropologist confirmed the remains were in fact human.

The bones were then removed to Dublin City Mortuary with a post-mortem completed on Tuesday, 21 April.

Yesterday, following a long Garda investigation, they were able to identify for certain that those bones belonged to Stephen.

Gardai are now urging anyone who is a living relative of his or who knew him to come forward.

They said: "Gardaí investigating the discovery of human remains in Rathmines on 9th April, 2020 have through DNA analysis, positively identified the remains as those of missing person Stephen Corrigan, date of birth: 8th June, 1963.

"Stephen was a resident in the Cork Street area of Dublin 8 and has been missing since 22nd November, 2011.

"Gardaí issued appeals to locate Stephen through Crimecall in May 2012, January 2013 and May 2014.

"Stephen has been identified through DNA analysis compared with a familial DNA sample provided by his mother. Sadly, Stephen’s mother is now deceased, as is his only other known blood relative.

"An Garda Síochána continue to try and identify surviving members of Stephen’s family and are appealing to any living relative of Stephen Corrigan or any member of the public who knew Stephen to contact Gardaí at Rathmines Garda Station on 01 666 6700, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
