Steph Curry is aiming to avoid the play-in tournament

Once again, Steph Curry reminded the world why he’s spoken of among the all-time greats. On Thursday (Feb. 22), the veteran guard produced 32 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals performance to help the Golden State Warriors overcome the Los Angeles Lakers, marking their sixth win in seven games.

When addressing the media after the game, Curry noted how Golden State aims to break into the top six of the Western Conference, ensuring playoff qualification without the need to navigate the play-in tournament. Curry did note, however, that it’s a lofty goal at such a late stage in the season.

“The way I approach it, the sixth seed is the goal,” Curry said. “Obviously, it guarantees you a spot in a series, and that’s what we want. The way our season has gone, taking a big goal and breaking it down is probably the ultimate test of staying right where you are. Win every game that’s in front of you. Build up joy, energy, and momentum. That’s a slow process. There’s confidence, but we haven’t proven that. … Literally, every game matters. … It’s a lofty goal but we know we can get there.”

Since Draymond Green was inserted as the Warriors starting center, the team has looked increasingly versatile and has been playing with both force and poise. Andrew Wiggins is suddenly emerging as a legitimate force on the wing, and multiple younger players are stepping up within their roles.

Curry’s performances have been exceptional this season despite this being his age-35 season. With him leading the way and the rest of Golden State’s roster starting to hit top gear, they can avoid the play-in tournament, assuming they can learn from the lessons they’ve learned throughout the season.
