Steph Curry carries an unfair burden with the Warriors offense

Steph Curry has once again been the Golden State Warriors best player this season. The 35-year-old point guard’s elite offense has helped carry the franchise’s offense throughout the season’s opening months while multiple players have struggled to reach their usual level of play. Curry, though, has had his tough moments, too. He’s ended a game twice this season without making a 3-point shot.

During a recent press conference, head coach Steve Kerr admitted Curry carries an unfair burden with the Warriors offense. He admitted Curry is forced to shoulder too much of a heavy load in terms of scoring and playmaking.

“I think there’s a little fatigue,” Kerr said. “It’s a long season. Usually, every year, he has a couple of spells where he’s not on his game, and that’s just natural for any player. But I think we’ve thrown a ton on his shoulders. The burden that Steph Curry has on him from this franchise is unfair, with Draymond’s suspension. Draymond is the vocal leader of this team. He and Steph have been co-captaining our group for a decade. Without Draymond here, that adds a lot more to Steph’s plate. We’re trying to integrate a lot of young players. Steph has a unique style. It’s the play after the play that matters with Steph. We’ve put him in some combinations where the play after the play isn’t happening. That’s frustrating for him.”

Curry has played in 34 games so far this season. He’s averaging 27.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He is shooting 45% from the field and 39.8% from 3-point range. Curry’s job should become easier once Draymond Green is back on the court upon his return from suspension.

Curry will certainly have some more historic moments throughout the remainder of this season. Whether those moments come deep in the playoffs will depend on how quickly Kerr and his coaching staff can help turn the season around.
