There are some NBA water cooler debates that will probably never have a definitive answer. Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James for the GOAT player. Hakeem Olajuwon vs. Shaquille O’Neal vs. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar vs. Bill Russell for the GOAT center. And so on and so forth.
But one of the more interesting conversations concerns the greatest point guard of all time. With so many contrasting styles in play between various eras, it probably comes down to a matter of preference. Or confidence.
For Steph Curry himself, it seems to be both.
On a recent episode of the Gilbert Arenas Show, the Golden State Warriors superstar was asked if he’s the finest point guard of all time. After taking a moment to ponder — not hesitate, a key distinction — Curry gave a definitive “yes.” And even while he would still shout out Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, Curry does have a legit argument:
.@StephenCurry30 SAID HE’S THE BEST POINT GUARD EVER. 👀🔥

Curry’s resume isn’t entirely on par with Johnson’s in terms of All-Star appearances, MVP awards, and championships. Yet. Those gaps aren’t that far apart for a four-time champion, two-time MVP, and nine-time All-Star. They’re the kind that could be closed by the time the 35-year-old Curry finishes his playing career in the coming years.
What Curry does have going for him is that he’s the inarguably greatest three-point shooter in history. Of everyone who has ever played NBA basketball (or the sport in general), Curry indisputably possesses the best range, efficiency, and deadliness from behind the arc. It’s what’s made his career so iconic in itself.
On the flip side, if someone still wanted to roll with Johnson, I wouldn’t begrudge it. A 6-foot-9 point guard who could run a transition offense with the best of them? At the helm of a dynasty with five championships? Yeah, that’s what we call an unmitigated unicorn, folks.
Curry should say he’s the best ever because it’s a valid point and because it’s a conversation that will always be subjective.
This was how Twitter reacted
He probably is. He and magic obviously have done it differently though. So I can see both sides. Bc up until this video, I would’ve unequivocally said magic. https://t.co/vXXZiJgDOT

I love Steph Curry and could never say a bad word about him. But some of y’all never saw Magic ball in real life and it shows.
No one will ever play the position of point guard better than Earvin Magic Johnson Jr. https://t.co/x3POp9Ukxt

there should be a whole bunch of point guards who believe this https://t.co/IUXGfWVcsS

Certainly its close enough for him to feel that legitimately, even personal bias aside. We are past Magic or Isiah having clearly better careers than Steph at this point and he is still going.
Assuming you do not count LeBron as a point guard. https://t.co/krtkafjykI

he should be saying this and nobody should be mad that he said it https://t.co/KMPvlDKflk

It’s always hard to fathom watching things live as they put but yes, Steph Curry is the best point guard ever. https://t.co/aaXsQvYvCN

Interesting convo. Hasn't even cracked the Top 40 in assists yet….but it's also a mostly positionless era and he's the engine for some of the best all-time offenses. To me, he's in the Magic/IT/Stockton elite tier but could see arguments both ways.
He should say this though. https://t.co/4W5zT22Mzt

and he said something we all knew so this isn’t news https://t.co/Mep8WAPfKi
