'Step in the right direction' as new toy library to open in Bulwell

People in Bulwell have spoken out about their joy over plans for a new toy shop for the town centre. The new shop has been described as a “step in the right direction" by some local residents, after others previously called for more traders to following the closure of Boots.

Signs have gone up which state a new Toy Library is opening in Commercial Road, and local parents have welcomed the news.

A part of the sign on the store reads: “A room to play.”

Sales assistant Emma Lacey, 32, who is originally from Bulwell, said: “A space where kids can go and play is what Bulwell needs. This looks like it’s going to be great, I can’t wait.

“When I saw it, I thought: it’ll definitely be used.” Emma, who has two daughters and one son, continued: “For younger kids especially this will be a place for them to play, interact and make friends. Older kids do need something too but you have to start somewhere and I get things don't just spring up overnight.”

It hasn’t been confirmed when the toy library will open. A Facebook post states that it is “coming soon.”

Emma added: “The toy library isn’t just a good thing for the kids, parents will also be thankful to have somewhere to take them and it’s easy to find.”

There is also a toy library in Brooklyn Road in Bulwell.. Local resident Charlene Grant, 35 said: “There’s another toy library which is fantastic but it only has access to the car park. The new toy library is a positive thing, it’s what Bulwell needs.”

Charlene, who works in a school continued: “It’s more the older kids too that need places to go to in the area.”

Jerome Gardener, who owns Jeromes Cafe on 207 Main Street, Bulwell, said: “We’ve done work with a toy library before and catered for them.

“This is the community I’ve lived and worked in. It’s nice to see that kids will have a place to go and it’s good to see a lot of new shops like the pet shop that will be coming to Bulwell.”

Reece Hill, 29 an engineer who lives in Bulwell said: “We’ve been asking for more shops in the town centre and this is a step in the right direction.

“Loads of people around here will use this, why wouldn’t they? The shop will be a good resource for children and a good resource for parents."

Reece who has two children continued: “Hopefully it lasts long, I’m fed up with seeing places come and go. I get times are tough but that drives people away from the area.”
