Steffi Simson is determined to turn more draws into victories as St Johnstone attempt to keep pace at the top end of the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2.
The winger netted the Perth side’s only goal of the game in a 1-1 tussle away at Boroughmuir Thistle on Sunday.
Saints sit third in the standings, seven points back of leaders Gartcairn and five behind second-placed Montrose.
“We’ve got a really good group of girls and a lot of talent within the team but, with that being said, we can definitely push for the league,” Simson told the Perthshire Advertiser this week.
“The league table is looking pretty tight around the middle at the moment and it’s starting to open up at the top and I think it’s really important for us to start turning the draws into victories before we get left behind.
“We’ve got a really big game against Montrose coming up and I think it’s important we focus on that to bridge the gap.”
Reflecting on the weekend draw with Boroughmuir Thistle, Simson admits there was some disappointment that three points weren’t added to the total.
The hosts had taken the lead in the 20th minute through Courtney McAvoy before Simson levelled proceedings after the break.
She said: “It would’ve been a great feeling to leave there with three points.
“I feel like we just didn’t really get started in the first half the way we know we could’ve. We did have the wind against us so it was challenging but we dug deep and had the determination in the second half.
“I think the disappointing part is that we lifted our standards and played some good football in the second half but we just couldn’t win ourselves the game.”
Netting her first goal in a competitive fixture since arriving at the club has provided Simson with a lift and she is ready to add to the tally as soon as possible.
“I’ve really enjoyed being at St Johnstone,” said Simson, who previously played with Dundee United. “I came here to get more game time and to build my confidence and so far I’ve been successful.
“It was a great feeling getting a goal and bringing us back into the game on Sunday. It’s always such a buzz scoring and it’s a really big confidence boost so I hope it’s the first of many for this season.”
Meanwhile, the draw for the fourth round of the Scottish Cup was made this week and Saints WFC were pulled out of the pot with Dryburgh Athletic. The away fixture is scheduled for the weekend of Sunday, January 8.
