Steeltown Murders viewers praise lead star Philip Glenister for his 'spot on' Welsh accent

The BBC’s latest drama Steeltown Murders aired its first episode on Monday, May 15 and as ever viewers quickly flocked to social media to share their thoughts. The four-parter tells the horrific true story of the 1973 Port Talbot murders, which remained unsolved until the early Noughties.

Steeltown Murders boasts an all-star cast that is led by Life on Mars’ Philip Glenister and Gavin and Stacey’s Steffan Rhodri. The drama splits its time between being set in the Seventies and the Noughties with actor Scott Arthur playing the same role as Philip - read our interview with him here.

One thing in particular that people were impressed with was Philip’s Welsh accent. Earlier on in the evening the 60-year-old actor, who was born in Middlesex, told Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas on The One Show that he was only “half Welsh”.

A third commented: “Top marks for the wonderful Philip Glenister for his spot on Welsh accent in #SteeltownMurders.” And a fourth said: "Philip Glenister is doing a good broad Welsh valleys accent for an English man, it’s believable.”

Sharing their thoughts on the drama itself, a further person commented: “Watching this now, excellent so far #SteeltownMurders.” And the same thoughts were shared by someone else, who wrote: “Kind of liking this.”

The official synopsis for the series, which is now available in its entirety on BBC iPlayer reads: “Three murders - unsolved but never forgotten. Thirty years on, can DCI Bethall find the serial killer who terrorised 1970s Port Talbot? True life drama of a cold case that made history.”
