The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t draft a safety this year but still got one on draft weekend. According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler the Steelers are signing free-agent safety Damontae Kazee to a one-year contract.
Kazee is headed into his sixth NFL season and is 28 years old. Kazee led the league in interceptions in 2018 with seven and had 15 in five years. This includes a rookie season where he only started one game and 2020 when he only played in four games.
Kazee has experience at both safety spots as well as slot cornerback. His versatility will be welcome on a Steelers defense still looking for a player to replace Mike Hilton. The Steelers did re-sign starting strong safety Terrell Edmunds this offseason but Kazee’s ball skills should keep him in the mix to be the team’s fifth defensive back.
