According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement with former Chicago Bears second overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky on a two-year deal. Trubisky spent last season as the backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. This is big news for the New Orleans Saints, as the Steelers are now taken out of the busy quarterback market.
The Steelers were often projected to be one of the teams in on Saints free agent quarterback Jameis Winston this off-season. The Saints have a little extra breathing room on that front now. The Steelers were also tied to a potential Jimmy Garappolo trade, which could also still be an option for the Saints now. The remaining teams to watch will be the Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, the Houston Texans, and Philadelphia Eagles.
This move obviously also takes Trubisky out of the competition for the next Saints starting quarterback, which was previously mentioned as a possibility by NFL Network’s Jane Slater. Despite what people may think, this has never been just a two-horserace between Jameis Winston and Deshaun Watson for the Saints job.
