Steelers HC Mike Tomlin stresses the importance of letting players be individuals

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the interview with Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin on The Pivot Podcast, you are missing out. Tomlin opened up about a huge number of topics including the importance of letting NFL players be individuals.

According to Tomlin, allowing players to be their authentic selves helps them come together as a team and sometimes it is too much work to be appropriate.

“We waste a lot of damn energy trying to be appropriate sometimes,” Tomlin said. “Man, you give people latitude to be their authentic selves, the collective is going to come together better.”

Pittsburgh is known for having some characters on the team and if we are being honest have been given far too much opportunity to be their authentic selves, to the detriment of the team. Had he perhaps stepped in sooner with guys like Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell, both might still be on the team and elite players.
