When Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan addressed the media on Thursday before the team had its first training camp practice, he was asked why the team didn’t give head coach Mike Tomlin a contract extension this offseason.
Khan said it wasn’t his department when it comes to Tomlin’s extension, but he did note he thinks he and Tomlin are going to be together in Pittsburgh for a long time. For the record, team president Art Rooney II is the one who is responsible for Tomlin’s contract.
After the retirement of Kevin Colbert, Khan took over the general manager position just over a year ago. His first full offseason in charge has been very active.
The fact that Tomlin doesn’t have a contract extension yet is a complete non-issue. Tomlin still has two years left on his deal. The team last gave him an extension with only one season left, and we expect them to follow that precedent. Tomlin not having a contract doesn’t mean the team is concerned — it is just a matter of procedure.
GM Omar Khan asked about Mike Tomlin not being extended this year with two years left on his contract, says it’s not his department, but: “I anticipate both coach and I will be here together for a long time.”
