According to NFL reporters Jeremy Fowler and Gerry Dulac, the Pittsburgh Steelers have their new defensive coordinator. The team is finalizing a contract with defensive assistant/secondary coach Teryl Austin to become the team’s defensive coordinator.
Austin is replacing Keith Butler who retired just after the end of the season. Butler has been with the team since 2003 and was the defensive coordinator since 2015.
The Steelers hired Austin in 2019 as a senior defensive assistant and secondary coach with an eye on him eventually becoming the defensive coordinator. The New York Giants had requested an interview with Austin for their defensive coordinator vacancy which likely prompted Pittsburgh to get this contract in place and have one less thing to worry about.
Steelers are finalizing deal with Teryl Austin to become new defensive coordinator, per source. Working out details today. The expected move getting done. @gerrydulac 1st.
