It only took minutes after the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season for Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward to be asked about his future. Heyward is 33 years old and coming off one of his best seasons and while it is clear he wants to remain with the Steelers, he knows better than to speak too soon on it.
“I wanna take time to think about what’s going on,” Heyward said. “I’d love to be here but you never know what’s going on in the future. I don’t take this for granted. I’d love to be here, but you don’t know the plans. But going forward, we gotta start fast. We dug too big of hole.”
Heyward has two years left on his current contract with cap hits of $22.5 and $22.4 million in each of the next two seasons. While I can’t imagine Heyward being released, a contract re-structure could be on the way. Is Heyward going to be OK with that to stay with the Steelers? We will find out in the offseason.
