Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl says they will ‘break the will’ of teams

Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl didn’t mince words when he talked about the makeup of this team after the first wave of free agency and the 2023 NFL draft. This is Weidl’s first year with Pittsburgh after coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles.

“We’re going to be big, Weidel said. We’re going to be physical. We’re going to be tough. We are gonna break the will of other teams.”

This is a mentality the Steelers haven’t had in a very very long time. The company line for too long has been “take what the other team gives them” but this feels a lot more like the Steelers will take what they want.

Pittsburgh’s focus this offseason has centered on rebuilding both sides of the line of scrimmage. Additions on both sides of the football will assure the Steelers don’t get pushed around anymore and will be the ones doing the pushing.

On offense, the Steelers added offensive tackle Broderick Jones and tight end Darnell Washington via the NFL draft. In free agency, the front office signed guards Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig to bolster the interior of the offensive lines. If everything works out the Steelers offensive and defensive fronts will be appreciably better in 2023 in large part due to the level of physicality they are going to play with.
