Steelers 2024 season review: Quarterbacks

With less than a month it is time to look back at each of the Pittsburgh Steelers positional units and look ahead at the upcoming offseason. First up we have the quarterbacks.

What worked

Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY Sports

The two things that worked for the Steelers quarterbacks in 2023 were the firing of Matt Canada and the offensive when Mason Rudolph was quarterback. Kenny Pickett fooled everyone in the preseason by being perfect and then his confidence seemed to crumble when the pressure was on.

What didn't work

The main thing that didn’t work was Matt Canada’s offense. We will never know for sure how much of it was just Canada being inept and how much was a conscious effort to minimize Pickett’s influence on the offense but the struggles were real. This created discontent among the players and confusion and anger in the fanbase.

What to expect

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Out is Canada and in is Arthur Smith at offensive coordinator. We expect to see a passing offense that is more confident and relies more on using the middle of the field and the tight ends. Both things Canada refused to do.

In terms of personnel, we expect the Steelers to be buyers when it comes to a veteran quarterback, whether it is a trade or free agency and if that doesn’t pan out, we expect them to take a close look at the draft to bring in competition.
