A statement from Gwent Police read: "We were called to Queensway, Llanwern, Newport at around 3.50am on Wednesday September 14, following reports of a medical emergency. Personnel from the Wales Air Ambulance and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended, and a Cwmbran man, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"His next of kin are aware and are receiving support from specialist officers. Enquiries are ongoing, and we’re liaising with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). A report has been submitted for the coroner in relation to the death."
A Tata Steel spokesperson said: "The health and safety of our employees, contractor partners and visitors has always been, and will remain, our most important priority. Our thoughts are with our colleague's family, friends and workmates at this distressing time."
Once one of the biggest steelworks in Wales employing thousands of people, steelmaking ceased at the Llanwern site in 2001 with the loss of 1,300 jobs. Its 'heavy end' was demolished in 2004 but some Tata operations remain including a hot strip mill, pickle lines, a cold strip mill and a hot dip galvanising line.
