'Staying no matter what!' — Manchester United fans rejoice at Cristiano Ronaldo transfer stance

The majority of Manchester United fans were left on edge on Saturday night as The Athletic dropped the bombshell that Jorge Mendes had floated the idea of Chelsea signing Cristiano Ronaldo while having a meeting with new owner Todd Boehly. The London club can, of course, offer the Portuguese star Champions League football for the coming season.

Ronaldo was the club's top scorer last season scoring 24 goals and it seems that, despite some fans questioning whether he would fit Erik ten Hag's system, the new manager is excited about working with the forward. Yet United's famous number seven is often the subject of speculation.

It is therefore reassuring that the Manchester Evening News understands that United deem Ronaldo 'not for sale' and they want and fully expect him to be part of the squad next season. This will be good news for fans who were worried that the club would also have to replace their striker this season.

Some fans had theorised that these 'talks' that Mendes was holding were to remind the club that they need to take this rebuild seriously. With pre-season starting on Monday, United are yet to sign a player and this will be concerning for Ten Hag.

But in terms of the here and now, United fans are happy that Ronaldo is staying and under Ten Hag they are hoping that he will improve on his goal tally from last year. Here are some of the fans' responses from Twitter:
