Location: On popular Pasteur St in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

Check-in experience: Friendly and efficient, with a fresh juice on arrival. Our bags were immediately swept away to our lovely room.

Room: A Deluxe room on the seventh floor, with a magnificent view out over the city. We had free Wi-Fi, a TV which annoyingly played a Vietnam ad on repeat unless you changed the channel, a safe and a minibar with two free waters daily.

Bathroom: Clean and modern, with a shower over the bath.

Toiletries: The usual suspects.

Facilities: The rooftop pool and bar were the stars of this hotel, and the main restaurant was very good too. It also has a cinema, small fitness centre with a nice view and a luxurious spa.

The bed: A comfy king.

Price: Rooms start from $137 a night, excluding fees and taxes.

Noise: There was some construction going on in the hotel next door to us, but luckily it wasn't too disturbing. Otherwise the room blocks out all noise bar the faint toots of city traffic.

Food and drink: A daily buffet breakfast included with our booking featuring a large array, including the usual bacon, eggs, pancakes, pastries, cereal, fruit as well as a selection of Asian food. The room service was efficient.

What's in the neighbourhood? You're just 10 minutes by foot from the Independence Palace. There are lots of eateries close by too, including Barbecue Garden, my favourite, which is just around the corner. The hotel is also close to the river.

What's so good about this place? The facilities are all very accessible and easy to find, but the highlight, without a doubt, is sipping cocktails on the rooftop by the pool.
