Stay in a 'quirky' old chapel building with 'character' in the Lake District

Many of us are choosing to travel closer to home instead of hopping on a plane to save time, money, and effort.

With winter almost here, there are plenty of scenic staycation spots to visit just a short car drive away from Liverpool. 'Chapel How' is in Ambleside in Cumbria, and offers visitors a 'quirky' trip away from home.

The Sykes Cottages location has an average rating of 4.5 out of five, and has been described as 'cosy' by visitor. It's a one hour and 50 minute drive away from Liverpool set in a Grade II listed chapel.

The unique-looking property sleeps up to six guests with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and 'fabulous views'. Dating back to 1550, the property retains its period features with arched church windows, exposed beams and a feature church pew in the dining area.

With gothic-style doors and three bedrooms, the property also features a special 'Belfry' bedroom to finish off the unique space. Visitors have described Chapel How as having the 'perfect' mix of modern and historical features.

Nestled in Ambleside's historic conservation area, the cottage is just far enough from the crowds with walking distance from Ambleside restaurants. A few minutes from the village is the shore of Lake Windermere at Waterhead, with lakeshore pubs and cafes, stunning lake views.

Chapel How has a comfortable living and dining area with a log effect fire and a shared outside space with seating. It also includes a kitchen with everything you need to rustle up a meal and fabulous views outside.

Amongst the reviews, one visitor said: "Yes the stairs squeak but after a while that just becomes part of the character of the apartment. Dedicated parking spot is a big bonus as parking in Ambleside can be difficult. New kitchen contained everything we needed. Location suited well as it is only a short walk from cafes and shops. Overall a great spot to spend a holiday and this would be high on our list for a return trip to the area."
