'Stay Away' - Warning issued young Brit men planning trips to Amsterdam

A warning has been issued to certain holidaymakers planning a trip to Amsterdam.

The Dutch capital is a popular destination as almost 2.5 million British visitors travel their each year. However, the city has also developed a reputation as a party capital due to its relaxed drugs laws, late night bars and sex tourism industry.

Locals have long complained about rowdy behaviour from some tourists and the council has now released a digital campaign aimed at 18 to 35-year-old men in the UK to crack down on anti-social behaviour. The new campaign is dubbed "Stay Away" - and targets people who search for terms including "stag party Amsterdam" or "pub crawl Amsterdam" - as Mirror Online reports

The campaign includes videos featuring young men staggering through the street before being cuffed by police officer, finger-printed and then taken for a mug-shot. The city council announced last month that it will become illegal to smoke cannabis on the street in Amsterdam's red light district later this year as part of plans to restrict people's access to the substance.

From mid-May this year, it will be forbidden to smoke cannabis in public spaces in the inner city between 4pm and 1am from Thursday to Sunday. The city's officials are also looking at whether they can ban take-away cannabis sales in the same time frame.

A ban of smoking in the spaces outside coffee shops - where cannabis can be bought - is also being considered. Ahead of the new laws coming into force, restaurants, bars and sex shows will have to shut at 2am and brothels at 3am instead of 6am from April.

According to Mirror Online, a spokesperson for the city council told Dutch News that the atmosphere in the Red Light District had become "dire" at night. They said: "A lot of people are under the influence (of drugs and alcohol) and hang around for a long time. This comes at the expense of a good night’s sleep for residents and the liveability and safety of the whole neighbourhood.’

"There will be a ban on drinking alcohol in public, more measures against drug dealers on the streets, and restrictions on alcohol sales in local shops in the red light district, where alcohol sales are already forbidden from Thursday night to Sunday."
