Ruben Amorim said this might be the worst Manchester United team in history after their 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
After recent positive results against Liverpool, Arsenal and Southampton, United are back at square one after the loss to Brighton left them 13th in the Premier League.
“In 10 games in the Premier League, we won two,” Amorim told reporters after the game.
Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November and acknowledged that results have not improved under his guidance.
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. So we are getting a new coach that is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.
“Like I said, I’m not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. Because I’m not naive and I know that we need to survive now.
“We are being the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know that you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go, your headlines.”
When you look at the stats, Amorim might be slightly exaggerating when he called his team ‘maybe the worst’ in the club’s history. However, that is not by a long margin and when it comes to the Premier League’s history, he has a point.
Manchester United Stats Which Explain Ruben Amorim’s ‘Worst Team’ Claim
There are a number of stats which might explain why Ruben Amorim described the current Manchester United team as ‘maybe the worst’ in its history.
At this stage of the season, only 13 United teams have had a lower points tally in the history of the club. In the last 50 years, only the 1986-87 (25) and 1989-90 (24) teams have fewer points than the Red Devils this term (26).
Perhaps the most damning stat comes from United’s sixth home Premier League defeat of the season.# This is the most losses they recorded from their opening 12 home matches of a league season since 1893-84.

United have lost 10 of their 22 Premier League games overall – the earliest into a league campaign that they have hit double figures for defeats since 1989-90 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The six defeats they suffered in December was the most in any month in their history since September 1930 (7).
They have also conceded the first goal in each of their last five games at Old Trafford. This is their joint-longest such run in Premier League history. United also conceded 18 goals in December. This is the most in a month since they let in the same amount back in March 1964.
Despite this, Manchester United have had worse teams in the past. They were relegated in 1973-74 and even further back they were relegated while getting conceding 115 goals in 1931-32.
In 1934 they came 20th in Division 2 – barely escaping demotion to Division 3 North.
Why Ruben Amorim Made The Claim
Ruben Amorim might have been sending Manchester United’s owners a message with his claim after the defeat to Brighton.
As the stats show, the Manchester United team is woeful on the pitch this season.
He may have been sending a distress signal to his bosses in an effort to sign new players in January.
However, it appears that Manchester United are more likely to lose players this month rather than bring them in. Marcus Rashford and Antony are both in talks about moves away from the club on loan.
