The Melbourne Stars have been set just 109 to win their crunch clash with the Adelaide Strikers as they desperately seek to keep their BBL finals hopes alive.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (3-17) and fellow bowlers did their job after Adam Zampa won the flip and sent the visitors in at the MCG on Thursday night.

Liam Hatcher (2-18) dismissed the competition's top two run-scorers - Matt Short (20) and Chris Lynn (one) - as the Strikers were bowled out for 108 in the 20th over.

It was the third-lowest total in franchise history when the Strikers have batted first.

Zampa (2-20) was also effective in a bowling unit that delivered almost 60 dot balls, while Luke Wood (1-33) was the only Stars bowler with an economy rate above five runs an over.

Joe Clarke and Tom Rogers will open the batting for the last-placed Stars, who are 0-2 this season when batting second.

Short got the Strikers off to a flyer when he hit two of the first three deliveries of the innings for six, taking 20 off Wood's opening over.

But he didn't do any more damage before skying a catch off Hatcher, who soon removed Lynn in a similar fashion.

Beau Webster provided the highlight of the first innings with a brilliant diving catch to remove Adam Hose (21) at extra cover.

The catch gave Coulter-Nile his second wicket and the right-arm quick had Ben Manenti caught behind with the next delivery, after the initial not-out call was overturned on review.

It completed Coulter-Nile's four overs, denying him the chance to bowl a hat-trick ball.

The Strikers are chasing their first BBL win against the Stars at the MCG, following five previous defeats.
