Stars light up the Trafford Centre in fascinating throwback photos - from baby Brooklyn Beckham to Monica Lewinsky

Manchester's landmarks, shopping and culture has always been a magnet for crowds and celebrities - and the nineties and noughties were no exception.

Back in September 1998, The Trafford Centre opened its doors for the very first time, seeing big retailers to sign up straight away, with some of the first spaces being taken by Selfridges , Debehnhams and Boots.

But the popular shopping destination also attracted huge stars in its first decade for performances, book signings and its many stores.

Here , we take a brief look back at some of the stars who lit up The Trafford Centre from 1998 to 2008 - from the Beckhams to Monica Lewinsky.

We chose a range of appearances from different celebrities over ten years. But, if there is someone we should have included, please let us know in the comments section.

Monica Lewinsky

The Trafford Centre hadn't even been open a year when it attracted huge stars from the UK and across the pond.

In March 1999, hundreds queued to meet Monica Lewinsky, former Intern at The White House, who was on a book signing tour.

For the signing of Monica's Story, she wore a Manchester United scarf.

Victoria and Brooklyn Beckham

New mum Victoria Beckham and then six-month old son Brooklyn were spotted on a shopping trip at The Trafford Centre on September 27, 1999.

Sporting a black cap and jeans and holding her first-born, this picture was taken before The Spice Girls announced their indefinite hiatus in 2000 and when husband David was playing for Manchester United.

Things came full circle in 2017 when Brooklyn, then 18, attended a top secret book signing at the Trafford Centre for his photography book, What I See.

Girls Aloud

Hundreds of screaming fans were given the chance to check out then-pop hopefuls Girls Aloud 20 years ago who were hoping to clinch the coveted Christmas No 1 spot.

In 2002, the Popstars: The Rivals girl band were at the Trafford Centre for the launch of their new single, Sound Of The Underground and went to work behind the tills at the HMV megastore, before wowing the crowds with a searing performance.

In 2004, the girl-band also returned to The Trafford Centre to turn on to turn on the Christmas lights.

Sara Cox and Meg Matthews

Just days before its grand opening, Bolton DJ Sara Cox and Meg Matthews, then wife of Noel Gallagher, ventured to the Trafford Centre on September 9, 1998.

The pair attended for a photo-call to open the new Selfridges in the centre.

On the day, Sara and Meg posed with the signature yellow Selfridges bags and raised a glass to celebrate.

David Beckham

The following year, Manchester United's David Beckham launched his book, Beckham: My World, at WH Smith's in the Trafford Centre in October 2000.

The footballer at the time was voted one of European football's brightest stars, with his marriage to Spice Girl Victoria Adams and the birth of their son, Brooklyn, crowning the couple's celebrity status.

Whilst much has been written about him, the book was the first time Beckham told his own story to the public.

Rachel Hunter

International supermodel and actress Rachel Hunter signed autographs at the launch of Ultimo's new Spring/Summer '04 collection at Debenhams, The Trafford Centre on March 23, 2004.

Hunter, the separated wife of Rod Stewart, took over as the face of Ultimo from Rod Stewart's then girlfriend and now wife Penny Lancaster.

Trinny and Susannah

Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine carved out a successful career in the noughties for their BAFTA Award-nominated makeover reality television show, What Not To Wear.

Their tough love earned them legions of fans and catapulted them to international fame, landing them slots on everything from The Oprah Winfrey Show to the Oscars red carpet.

In 2004, they held a Trinny and Susannah's "What Not to Wear" Masterclass at Old Trafford Centre.

Jo O'Meara

In April 2003, S Club 7 announced that they were to disband. But two years later, band member Jo O'Meara embarked on a solo career.

She released her first hit in September 2005 with debut hit What Hurts the Most, which reached number 13 in the UK Singles Chart, which followed with her album.

That same month, she held an in-store performance at HMV in the Trafford Centre on September 28.

Shayne Ward and Louis Walsh

In 2005, Shayne Ward, from Clayton, rose to fame as the winner of the second series of The X Factor , with his debut single, That's My Goal, gaining the Christmas number one spot.

That year, the X Factor hopeful attending the Christmas Lights Ceremony at the Trafford Centre with mentor Louis Walsh.

Ricky Hatton, Nicky Sanderson, Simon Webb and Bruce Jones were among those who also attended the event.

Wayne Rooney

Before his recent Amazon Prime documentary, marriage to Coleen and becoming a father, Wayne launched his own book.

The Manchester United footballer at the time attended a book signing at WH Smiths, Trafford Centre in August 2006.

Richard Fleeshman

After playing Craig Harris in Coronation Street, actor and singer Richard Fleeshman embarked on a solo music career, with his debut single Coming Down and album, Neon in 2007.

But a year before in 2006, he won ITV's Soapstar Superstar and performed at the Star Studded Christmas Lights Switch On at The Trafford Centre.

Busted's Matt Willis, Danny Wood of New Kids on the Block and S Club 7's Bradley McIntosh also performed.

Geri Halliwell

Fans of the Spice Girls were left heartbroken after Geri Haliwell decided to quit the group in 1998.

But a decade later, all five members returned for The Return of The Spice Girls Tour in 2008 - the same year Geri launched her first children's book.

On May 11, 2008, Geri posed before signing her book Ugenia Lavender'at Foyles in Selfridges at The Trafford Centre.

Coleen Rooney

The same year as her marriage to long-term partner Wayne, Coleen Rooney launched her own book, Coleen's Real Style.

Husband Wayne was still playing for Manchester United at the time.

Suzanne Shaw

Suzanne Shaw rose to fame after winning the talent contest Popstars with band Hear'Say in 2001.

But despite the band's split a year later just after her 21st birthday, Suzanne went on to establish herself as a leading lady on the West End, appear on television and launch her own perfume.

Peter Andre and David Gest

Firewords and an 8ft high birthday cake topped off a week of celebrations to mark the Trafford Centre's 10th anniversary in 2008.

At the time, Gordon McKinnon, director of operations, said: "We don't do anything in half-measures here and our birthday party was no exception".

Highlights included a dinner party for 500 guests, a fashion shows and gifts and there was also music from boy band Avenue and Swedish dance act Basshunter and visits from Peter Andre and David Gest.
