Starmer pledges no more gimmicks or gesture politics as he resets plan to tackle people smuggling

Sir Keir Starmer pledged no more gimmicks or gesture politics as he “reset” the UK’s plan to tackle people smuggling.

The prime minister today (4 November) pledged a further £75 million for the border command, doubling the total funding to £150 million over the next two years.

Speaking at the Interpol General Assembly in Glasgow, Sir Keir appeared to take aim at the Conservative’s failed Rwanda plan.

He said: “This Labour government is resetting the UK’s whole approach to this challenge.

“No more gimmicks, no more gesture politics, no more irresponsible and undeliverable promises, that almost by design seek conflict with other countries.

“We’ve turned the page on all of that because such promises are not worth the paper they are written on.”
